How to Judge a Good Ultrasound Technician Training: Detailed Discussion

Ultrasound technology is used in detecting abnormalities in the internal tissues and organs. Ultrasound is used extensively in many medical procedures as an indispensable, non-invasive diagnosis tool. Ultrasound technicians are the health care providers responsible for operation of the ultrasound machine. The transducer sends high resonance sound waves into the body which is reflected back into the machine. The machine records the signal and produces sharp and clear images, however, the success of the procedure depends on the skill of the ultrasound technician.

Accreditation

The first thing one should know about ultrasound technician training is that quality training from accredited institutions is recognised as meeting the requirements of the Medical System. But there are also training programs which are not accredited and you need to be aware how to tell the difference. Usually, these accredited training programs have limited availability resulting in a waiting period prior to admission into a course. You may think of joining an unaccredited program during this time but we advise against that.  You may find that you can meet all the requirements of the training institution, and successfully pass the course, only to discover that you need further qualifications or experience to find employment.

Requirements

The only requirement for admission to a training program is either a high school diploma or a GED equivalent at least. Basics in computer skills, communication skills and some other medicinal subjects would be beneficial.

Types of degrees available

There are three types of ultrasound technician trainings available: certificate level, associate degree and bachelor degree. Certificate level training covers between six months to one year, however short certificate training of eight months and less is not recommended. Associate degrees are the most common and take two years for completion.  However, if you have fulfilled some pre-requisite courses, you may be able to shorten the training to one year. Bachelor degrees are a four year, full-fledged course, and efficient training programs cover many technological feature of the ultrasound process.
