Variety of medical settings are  available for someone to work with an ultrasound or a sonography degree . Ultrasound technicians can work in the hospitals, doctor’s office, medical laboratories, diagnostic laboratories, mobile imaging units, medical research centers, nursing homes and veterinary clinics. But most of the sonogrpahers prefer hospitals as their workplace. The data by Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that more than half of the ultrasound techs work in hospitals.

There is no compulsion for any ultrasound technician to work only in hospitals.  The other fields  can be chosen according to his/her field of specialty.

• Specialties such as echo-cardiography dealing  with heart health can work in a heart specialized center.

• A gastroenterology sonographer can work in a gastroenterology clinic and deal with examination of the solid organs  in the abdomen.

• Technicians who deals with neurology, ophthalmology etc can choose the diverse field according to the specialty they hold.

• Alternately, the techs dealing with obstetrics, the songraphy dealing with body and female reproductive systems can work in hospitals, maternity care homes and even in mobile imaging units. Patients seeking such sonography services are often pregnant mothers wanting to know about their babies’ development under the womb with the help of ultrasound.

• Working in mobile imaging units is simpler than any other settings. In such setting large trucks carry equipment like MRI and ultrasound machines that travels from hospitals to hospitals and even to rural parts.  The surplus benefit is that continuous work pressure is not felt by such technicians

• Ultrasound techs working in veterinary clinics don’t have to work with humans at all. Their work is to deal with the animals and this specialization is also growing at increasing pace. In such career, the technicians are required to perform ultrasound for animals and the case may or may not be different from humans. For instance, as a veterinary clinic sonographer, s/he may have to deal with pregnant dog imaging its baby.  They may also have to deal with  broken bone of  a pet monkey or so on.

In other facilities, the demand for the sonographers would be according to the service provided. The service provided by a nursing home can be different from the service provided by medical research centers, and thus the sonographers are hired accordingly. But whatever the facility be, a skilled and dedicated sonographer can only excel in career. Like all other professions, the ultrasound technicians also need to show a great motivation towards work in order to be successful. All the best for the future.
